Did you know.. about Tungsten?

Did you know that it is a chemical element with the chemical symbol W and atomic number 74.

Tungsten has the highest melting point of these refractory metals at 3422°C.

It is very robust and has an extremely high tensile strength; it has the ability to be drawn into very thin wires.

Tungsten’s corrosion resistance is also very good.

Applications include; lighting elements, X-ray targets, heating elements, missile components, and due to its high density is used as counter weights.

RBS closing precious metals desk

It has come to the attention of the media that The Royal Bank Of Scotland will be closing down their precious metals desk soon and maybe even closing their precious metal research team down as well.

A spokesperson for the bank declined to comment on the status of RBS's four-member precious metals trading team but instead reiterated the bank's earlier statement regarding the review of their precious metals research.

"We are constantly reviewing our businesses in line with our strategy but have nothing new to advise you on at this time," the spokesperson said.

RBS, which is 83%-owned by the U.K. taxpayer following a bailout during the financial crisis, only has commodity trading operations in precious metals after it sold its 51% stake in RBS Sempra Commodities in 2010.

The bank's precious metal trading operation is relatively small, and RBS is an Ordinary, rather than Market-Making, member of the London Bullion Market Association.

Security Dog To Sniff Out Stolen Metal

It may sound a little bit unusual but the first Detection Dog in the world to be trained to sniff out forensic markings on stolen metal is set to help police officers crack down on metal theft in the UK.

Mick Swindells started his company Search Dogs UK after retiring as a police officer for Lancashire Constabulary. He has trained dogs for a variety of purposes including drugs detection, tracking and trailing, and disaster recovery.

Mick said: “Jazz is a world-first. She has been trained to sniff out SelectaDNA, which is a unique covert security marker being used by more than three quarters of UK Police forces to track down burglars, robbers and metal thieves and bring them to justice.”

He continued: “As humans we can only search in 2D ie. in the line of sight, but dogs can search in 3D by using their noses. They can be incredibly accurate, and can pinpoint their target to within a couple of centimetres.

“Jazz is able to touch the marked metal with her nose identifying the target scent of SelectaDNA, allowing officers to move in at this point and make further investigations.”

James Brown from Selectamark, the Kent-based security company that produces SelectaDNA, said: “Jazz could revolutionise the way we search for stolen metals and criminals themselves.”

He explained: “Previously, officers had to search manually for marked metal which could prove time consuming and at times not successful as often the process was like finding a needle in a haystack.

“The combination of using a trained dog like Jazz to sniff out stolen metal marked with SelectaDNA is surely the ultimate search tool for police and any other investigators determined to catch metal thieves and other types of offenders.”

Niobium Fabrication

Niobium is a chemical element with the symbol NB and atomic number 41. It is a soft, grey, ductile transition metal.

Niobium has a similar structure to Tantalum and is produced in a similar method.
It too has a very high melting point of around 2470°C.

It has excellent corrosive resistance and has good cold ductility.

It is however half as dense as Tantalum.

Applications include; sintering trays and boats, special chemical applications, superconductors, medical components, jet engine parts and is used in the lighting industry.

Metal Fabrication Essex

Specialist Stockist, Suppliers & Manufacturers of Machined and Fabricated products in; Molybdenum, Tantalum, Tungsten, Niobium, Zirconium, Titanium, Gold, Silver and Platinum

Molybdenum is a very hard, pure element with an extremely high melting point of around 2620°C, it has a high thermal conductivity and is corrosive resistant to glass and other metals.
Applications include; sintering trays and boats, charge carriers, aerospace parts, plasma spraying nozzles and electrodes, sputtering targets, furnace components, glass stirrers, and medical parts.

Tantalum is generally made from sintering the powdered ore to produce a metal with an extremely high melting point of approximately 2990°C. It has an excellent resistance to corrosion against molten metals and liquids, is biocompatible and has very high conductivity.
Applications include; heat exchanger tubes, charge carriers, capacitors, electrodes and grounding rings, jet engine parts, missile parts and vacuum furnace parts.

Applications include; lighting elements, X-ray targets, heating elements, missile components, and due to its high density is used as counter weights.

Zirconium is a lustrous, greyish-white, soft, ductile, and malleable, it is highly resistant to corrosion by alkalis, acids, salt water, and other agents. The melting point of zirconium is approx 1855°C
Applications include; laboratory crucibles, metallurgical furnaces, surgical appliances, missile components and vacuum tube filaments.

Not War Bombs

Alleged Second World War Bombs that were found along Clacton's beach were later found to be none other than metal and concrete.

The findings by a man and his dog then began an evacuation of the local area and a specialist bomb squad was called to arrange a detonation.

After the controlled detonation of one of the four metal objects, it was discovered the items were not bombs and they have now been removed.
