Olympic Medals Contain Less Gold

When we first heard that London would be holding the 2012 Olympic games, we looked into who and how the Olympic medals would be made, we wrote a post about how the medals would be made back in 2011.
Click here to read it
This year’s Olympic medals that were made by Royal Mint, were being guarded at the Tower of London until the Games began on July 27.
The 2012 gold medal is 92.5 percent silver and 1.34 percent gold, with the rest copper.
The silver medal is 92.5 percent silver, with the remainder copper, and the bronze medal is 97 percent copper, 2.5 percent zinc and 0.5 percent tin.
Although there is only 1.34% gold in the gold medal, it has been like this since 1912 when the last gold medals were handed out in Stockholm at the Olympic Games in Sweden, and its mainly because the price of gold has increased so greatly that to create 2000 medals out of gold would not be cost effective as well as causing possible problems with people trying to steal them.
The silver is 92.5% silver, which in recent months silver has been trying to overtake gold and although is is not worth as much as gold, could it cause problems?
We want to wish everyone competing in the 2012 Olympic games from all over the world, the best of luck and are supporting Team GB all the way.

The metal sculpture that was put up a few weeks ago on a roundabout in Hadleigh, Essex may be moved once the olympic games have finished. It was placed there to commemorate the Olympic sport of mountain biking which is being held during August in Hadleigh. It has been now stated that it could possibley be moved to the spot of the olympic game instead of the roundabout.
There have been a couple of sculptures placed around Hadleigh along with numerous flags and signs to show support of the games.
Frustrated resident Bill Tiffin, of Arcadian Gardens, Hadleigh, claims repositioning it would leave it open to vandalism.
He said: “It is absolutely ludicrous. If they truly want it to be a legacy to the Games then the roundabout is already a great location, because everyone can see the sculpture as it’s right at the heart of the area.
“It is crazy to relocate it after all the work and money that has gone into it.
“If they put it in Hadleigh Farm it will just get vandalised and completely ruined because it will be out of sight, which would be a huge waste of money.”
An Essex County Council spokesman admitted Hadleigh Farm was being considered as a permanent venue.
He said: “One option being considered is a move to the Hadleigh Mountain Bike Venue to give future visitors an opportunity to reflect on the Games and the inspiring effect that this has had on the county.
“The sculpture will not be moved in six weeks and we will take on the views and opinions of residents to see where they would like this sculpture to be placed.”

Suppliers Of Gold, Gold Fabrication & Gold Products

Gold is a chemical element with the symbol Au (from its Latin name aurum) and atomic number 79. It is a highly sought-after precious metal, having been used as money, as a store of value, in jewelry, in sculpture, and for ornamentation since the beginning of recorded history.
The metal occurs as nuggets or grains in rocks, underground “veins” and in alluvial deposits. It is one of the coinage metals. Gold is dense, soft, shiny and the most malleable and ductile substance known. Pure gold has a bright yellow color traditionally considered attractive.
Gold formed the basis for the gold standard used before the collapse of the Bretton Woods system in 1971. The ISO currency code of gold bullion is XAU.

Man Electrocuted In Essex Stealing Metal

On Wednesday 27th June , you may have been affected by delayed trains on the C2C line running from Shoebury to Fenchurch Street, if you are still unsure why then its because its alleged a man was killed whilst trying to steal copper wire from the train lines.
In a statement made by the British Transport Police they said “At 6.51am BTP were called to the Castle Lane area of Hadleigh, Essex between Benfleet and Leigh-on-Sea following a report of disruption to power lines in the area and a body on the railway embankment.
“BTP, Essex Police, East of England Ambulance Service and Network Rail attended the scene and the body of a man in his 40s was found beside the line. He appears to have been electrocuted.
“This death is currently being treated as unexplained. The possibility that this death is related to an attempted metal cable theft is one line of enquiry at this time.”
It is still unknown to the public what actually happened, the incident caused major delays due to no trains being able to leave Benfleet Station and no way of running through.
What is known is that there was another male involved and has been arrested and questioned relating to the incident.

Amendment to Scrap Metal Merchants Act 1964

“Due to a significant rise in value, metal has become a much sought after commodity. This increased demand has resulted in a sharp rise in metal theft nationally. Metal fencing, gates, manhole covers and other metallic items are stolen on a regular basis.
Property is raided for lead, copper and cabling. War memorials and statues have been taken. Overhead power lines are stolen at serious risk to personal safety with huge costs for replacement and major inconvenience to the public.
Historically the scrap metal trade has been a cash in hand industry. This creates difficulties as there is no audit trail, making identification of individuals who may be trading stolen metal or who may be committing tax or benefits fraud, a difficult proposition.
An amendment to the Scrap Metal Merchants Act 1964 to prohibit cash transactions would make payment by cheque or directly into a bank account mandatory and would be a significant component in reducing metal theft.”
This information was copied from direct.gov to promote the e-petition Amendment to Scrap Metal Merchants Act 1964.

Our blasting skills

We have two dry and one vapour blasters and we under take most blasting jobs for motorcycle and car restoration work.
If there is anything else you would like us to do for you please ask and we see what we can do for you.
Bead & Aqua Blasting

A recent addition to Special Metals Fabrication facility is the installation of a Guyson bead / grit blaster and a Vaqua aqua blaster.

Aquablasting

Aquablasting is a method of blasting using a very fine media and mixing it with water. This is the ultimate surface impact treatment for stainless steel and other non ferrous metals, leaving a super smooth easy wipe stain resistant finish.

Beadblasting

Beadblasting is done using fine non metallic abrasives to produce a perfectly clean uniform finish, even on the most awkward of shapes. There are several different attractive bead blast finishes we can achieve. Both of the above methods are cost effective and time saving surface preparations. They are a non aggressive cleaning process for corroded, painted and old and tired looking metal items.

JFK Airport Evacuation Due To Unplugged Metal Detector

JFK Airport was thrown into drama when a metal detector, manned by a airport worker, had not been working and was failed to be recognised.
The drama at Terminal 7 was caused by screener  Mr Majed, who had manned Lane No. 1 during the morning shift with no idea his metal detector was actually not working.
“The truth is, this is the failure of the most basic level of diligence,” a law-enforcement source said.
“How can you expect the public to feel confident of the mission of the Transport Security Agency if they don’t even know if the lights are turned on?”
The obvious problem here is that any body who walked through that metal detector could have been carrying anything, so everybody who had walked through had to come back and walked back through again. The chaos caused passengers to become annoyed as well as late for what they were coming here for. Also due to the amount of people in the airport, there couldn’t be any more people fitted into it, which made 2 planes have to turn around back off the run way and circle the area until they could come in land again.
