Scrap Metal Thieves

Scrap metal thieves have violated a Maldon library and cemetery in a string of metal thefts to hit the city.
Around £1000 worth of lead was stolen from the roof of a library and this is days after £300 worth of the same metal was stolen from the same roof!

Thieves also took £250 worth of copper from the cemetery building.

Police are warning people to keep aware of buildings that could possibly be on the scrap thieves list next, old buildings possibly that use lead or copper.

Olympic Medals Worth More Than You Think

Gold and silver Olympic medals, were they melted down and priced accordingly, are more valuable than ever, but third place winners who received bronze may not be as successful should they trade in.
Not that I would think any athlete would swap in their medal for money, what would be the point of all that hard work?
Based on Friday’s Canadien prices for metal futures, the gold medal that Rosannagh MacLennan won in the women’s trampoline event would fetch about $655.
The nine silver medals awarded to Team Canada for placing second in men’s eight rowing – eight medals for the rowers and one for coxswain Brian Price – are worth approximately $3,006, or $334 apiece.
But the combined value of the 20 bronze medals awarded to Team Canada for their third-place women’s soccer win is less than $60

Lancashire have created ‘Operation Tornado’

A Bolton court were forced to interupt an important hearing when it was found their air conditioning unit had been tampered with.
metal thief had selfishly taken it upon themselves to steal a part of the machine, so they could sell it, and left the court feeling hot and stuffy.
Due to the members of staff and members of public in the court at the time, they were all evacuated outside whilst the problem was looked at.
Bolton council had to have the problem fixed which cost them £250, although at the time they didn’t report it to the police.
A spokesman from Bolton Council said: “The cost of the repair was approximately £250.
“While, as a matter of course, we normally report incidents of theft to the police, in this case the value of the theft was small and there’s insufficient evidence available that would have led to a conviction.”
In May six scrapyards in Bolton signed up to Operation Tornado — a police scheme to make it easier to trace sellers of stolen metal.
If you and/or your company would like to join this operation then please contact Bolton Council.

Team GB Hockey Captain Metal Jaw

Great Britain captain Kate Walsh has had surgery to insert a metal plate in a fractured jaw but could yet still feature in the Olympics.
Kate Welsh, captain of the Olympic GB hockey team has had to have a metal plate fitted into jaw after being hit with a hockey stick to the mouth during a game against Japan.
The 32-year-old had surgery on Monday morning but the medical advice is that it should not preclude her from playing, Team GB have confirmed.
‘This morning she successfully underwent a surgical operation to stabilise the fracture with a plate,’ said a Team GB statement.
‘Her recovery from the operation will be monitored and her ongoing participation in the Olympic Games will be reviewed following her return to the athletes’ village. The injury itself is not expected to prevent Walsh from playing hockey.
‘Her continued participation is dependent on her recovery from the surgery and this will be assessed on an ongoing basis over the coming days.
‘She is in good spirits and wishes to thank the hospital staff who have cared for her and all of those who have wished her well via social media.’
She could continue to play within the team for the rest of the Olympics, after they carried on to beat Japan 4-0.
